ISSL/WISO European Championships
On 4 August 1972, the International Speed Skating League (ISSL) was presented to the world. The new organisation had contracted most of the top male speed skaters of the moment. The movement was met with boycotts from existing speed skating organizations and rinks, low public interest and - as a result - a lack of money. After the 1972/73 season, ISSL was disbanded, but replaced with the World International Speedskating Organization (WISO), but continuing money troubles meant WISO folded halfway the 1973/74 season. Because of that, only two editions of the ISSL/WISO European Championships were ever held.
