From 1933 to 1935 the Oslo Skøiteklubb (OSK) organised speed skating World Championships for women. Due to their success, the International Skating Union (ISU) decided to stage World Championships from 1936, making the OSK competition obsolete. The 1933-1935 tournaments were never recognised by the ISU as World Championships.

With the outbreak of World War II in September 1939, official ISU championships were suspended. In the winter of 1940, OSK organised an international competition that was dubbed an unofficial World Championship and attracted all the top skaters. This was repeated in 1946, as ISU competitions were only reinstated in 1947.
