The 2017 edition was originally scheduled to be held in Hambantota (SRI). The city lost the hosting rights due to government political interference in the national Olympic committee. As no new host city could be found the Games have been postponed for four year.

The 2021 edition was originally scheduled to be held in Surabaya (INA) but the hosting rights have been rejected after Jakarta/Palembang (INA) was awarded the 2018 Asian Games. As new host Shantou (CHN) was selected with the Games scheduled to be held November 2021 but first postponed to December 2022 and later cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Games should now be held from 23 January to 7 February 2024.
