The original score of the round 2 Group E match Soviet Union vs. Romania was 8-7, which was changed to 5-0 after the Romanian players left the pool at 7-7 with about eight seconds left to play to protest a referee decision allowing the Soviet Union to score an empty net winner.

ITA, HUN, YUG, USA (later withdrawn), ROU, and FRG (later withdrawn) qualified for the 1980 Moskva Olympics. URS as host of the 1980 Olympics was qualified automatically.
